We’ve switched to biennial data gathering for the city profiles — The data available here was collected in early 2022 and originally published in last year’s Canadian City Parks Report.
City Profile
Winnipeg
- Winnipeg is one of 53% of cities with a park system master plan updated within the last 10 years.
- Winnipeg is one of 57% of cities that has a seniors strategy that includes parks.
- Winnipeg is above average for number of community gardens relative to population for cities over 500,000 residents, at nearly 7 community gardens per 100,000 people.
- The city’s recently approved Parks Strategy outlines the vision, values and goals of the city’s parkland system. It emphasizes equitable distribution of parkland assets and services, inclusion of an increasingly diverse population of Winnipeggers, and supporting reconciliation through collaborative placemaking with Indigenous communities.
- Two Winnipeg parks received upgrades last year to make them more accessible and enjoyable to local residents. These improvements include a modernized shelter and washroom facility at Little Mountain Park and a $1.5 million pavilion at Crescent Drive Park.
- A pop-up ski library, run by Winnipeg Trails Association through their program WinterPeg, travelled around to dozens of parks and green spaces across the city last winter, allowing Winnipeggers to borrow skis, poles, and boots, as well as snowshoes, kick sleds and wheel blades for people using wheelchairs.
