Kitchener
- Kitchener is above average for percentage of parkland that is natural area at 52%.
- Kitchener is one of 57% of cities that has a seniors strategy that includes parks.
- Kitchener is one of 63% of cities that has an accessibility strategy that includes parks.
- In Kitchener, biodiversity and naturalization work is being baked into park renewal projects. In 2022, a “microforest” will be established at Westwood Park, and other park renewal programs focus on alternative plantings that enhance biodiversity.
- While most cities in Canada are losing green space, Kitchener is one of a few cities that saw an increase in “greenness” between 2011 and 2019, according to a new Statistics Canada ecosystem accounting program.
- The city is adding trails and parks to Google Street View this summer to improve residents’ knowledge of trail conditions and amenities, allowing them to discover new green spaces within the city. An electric-powered tricycle driven by a student wearing a 360-degree camera on their helmet will capture the action.
