We’ve switched to biennial data gathering for the city profiles — The data available here was collected in early 2022 and originally published in last year’s Canadian City Parks Report.
City Profile
Fredericton
- Fredericton has the most hectares of natural area relative to population with 9.7 hectares per thousand people.
- Fredericton has the second most hectares of parkland relative to population with 21.6 hectares per thousand people.
- Fredericton has the second highest number of volunteers relative to population at nearly 14 volunteers per thousand people.
- The city is hosting the fourth annual Summer Artist-in-Residence program in two city parks, where artists can apply for a two-week residency to connect with the local community while they work on creative projects surrounded by urban nature.
- The city is collaborating with a University of New Brunswick professor to measure the age of hemlock trees, estimated to be 500 years old, in Odell Park. The research will also investigate the effects of climate change on the trees to allow the city to better protect them moving forward.
- For the first time, Fredericton took part in No Mow May, suspending mowing on over 60 municipal properties, or roughly 25% of the land normally mowed, to provide pollinator-friendly habitats.
